Privacy policy
Effective 26 September 2026
Ibex Reader is an offline-first reading app for iOS, Android, desktop, and the web. This policy explains what happens to information you put in the app.
Information stored on your device
Ibex Reader stores books you import and information needed to use them, including book metadata, reading positions, highlights, notes, vocabulary settings, and appearance preferences. Imported EPUB files and their processed reading content remain in the app's local storage. A particular build may also include packaged books, notes, or definitions.
This information is stored on your device or, for the web version, in your browser's local storage. Ibex Reader does not require an account and does not automatically sync your library or reading data to a developer-operated server.
Information sent outside the app
Ibex Reader does not include advertising, analytics, or tracking. It does not automatically send your imported books, highlights, notes, or reading history to us.
These actions can send information to a service or app you choose:
- Translation and web search. If you request translation or search for selected text, that text is passed to an installed translation app or opened in Google Translate or Google Search. Those services handle the text under their own privacy policies.
- External links. If you open a link from a book or the app, your browser or the destination service receives the request and may receive information normally sent when opening a website.
- Backups and exports. A JSON backup or highlights export can contain reading data, including notes and highlights. A destination you choose, such as a file provider, messaging app, or cloud drive, may receive a copy. Ibex Reader does not choose a destination for you.
- Contacting us. If you contact the publisher, we receive the information you include and use it to respond.
When you use the web version, the site host receives requests needed to deliver the site and may process routine technical information such as your IP address and browser details. Your locally stored reader data is not automatically included in those requests.
Retention and your choices
Local reading data remains until you remove it, clear the app's data, clear the web version's site data, or uninstall the app. Removing a book may offer a choice to keep or delete its associated reading data. A backup or export saved elsewhere remains under your control and is not removed when you delete app data. Ibex Reader does not operate a cloud backup service; export a backup before uninstalling if you want to keep your data.
You can avoid sending selected text to an external service by not using translation or web search. You can choose whether and where to save or share backups.
Security
The mobile and desktop apps store reading data in app-managed local storage. Access to your device, browser profile, exported files, or chosen sharing destination may expose that data. Keep your device and exported backups secure.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy if the app's data practices change. We will update the effective date above when that happens.
